Hey Hey 16K

March 1st, 2006 by Sean in Retro Games

Hey Hey 16K
Here’s a great song (and accompanying flash video) which will certainly raise a smile for anyone who owned an 8-bit home computer (especially the Spectrum). And if you don’t recognise some of the games shown take a look at our Character Advent Calendar, where you’ll spot one or two of the games featured in the song.

Check it out here.

Sega Classics Collection

February 3rd, 2006 by Sean in Game Reviews, Retro Games

OutRun
Anyone who owned a Sega MegaDrive/Genesis and feels like a trip down memory lane could do a lot worse than pick up a copy of Sega Classics Collection for the PS2. The package consists of no less than 9 old Sega games, most of which will be instantly recognisable by the majority of gamers.

For many people the highlight will undoubtedly be OutRun, the racer which when it first appeared in the arcades in 1986 ushered in a new generation of driving games. Also present is Virtua Racer, one of the early games to start using 3D polygons to show the game world rather than 2D bitmapped images, and Monaco GP, a top down viewed racing game.

If beat ‘em ups are more your thing then Golden Axe is for you. This was a great fantasy hack and slash game which I know swallowed a fair bit of my pocket change. You can play as Warrior, Dwarf or Maiden (bit soft sounding considering she’s got a massive sword!) and can ride on weird creatures and use magic potions to aid you on your quest.

mortalkombat
If you are up for the challenge and know, your karate kicks and punches then you maybe able to conquer Mortal Kombat for Sega Genesis.

You play in a tournament type situation where you must win matches against other players. You can play the game against a computer opponent or one of your friends. It is a battle similar to good versus evil, where you can choose from a variety of characters.

As you learn the controls and the special moves and abilities each character possess you will begin to get ahead in the game. The idea is to win each match and protect the earth from demonic take over. Each character has their own special abilities like with Street Fighter, such as you may possess lightening.

Rainbow Islands Revolution

January 9th, 2006 by Sean in Game Previews, Retro Games

Rainbow Islands Revolution
One of my all time favourite arcade platform games is Rainbow Islands, the sequel to the equally classic Bubble Bobble, and I’m quite looking forward to the prospect of the updates on their way from Rising Star Games.

Rainbow Islands Revolution for the Nintendo DS uses both of the screens of the DS to provide a tall vertical scrolling view of the world. The heroes, Bub and Bob, are trapped inside bubbles, which you can move around by holding the stylus over them and dragging it around on the bottom screen.

In the original, you could fire rainbows across the screen in order to trap and destroy enemies, and also aid your progress up the screen. This feature is retained in the update but now you can draw rainbows wherever you like using the stylus, so long as you have enough rainbow energy that is. The length of the rainbows you can draw can also be extended by collecting magic red pots left behind when you destroy enemies, just like in the original.

Sonic the Hedgehog

January 6th, 2006 by Anita in Retro Games

sonic
For anyone who hasn’t played Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega, you are missing out on some fun. I love the way in which Sonic rolls up in a ball and then zooms across the screen.

When you play this game on Sega, you are of course Sonic. He is a cute blue hedgehog. He has a cool gift of super speed and he is against Dr. Robotnik who of course wants to rule the world, but he also has the desire to turn all animals into robots by using the power of the Chaos Emeralds. In this game, you will play six different zones each one with three acts. The levels have all kinds of items boxes and rings that are filled with shields that will protect you against one hit. After you get 10 rings, you are invincible for a short period of time, speed up shoes will give you more speed and you will also find life boxes.

Pacman

December 30th, 2005 by Anita in Retro Games

pacman
Do you remember going to the mall and playing Pacman? If you loved it as much I did, you will sure enjoy sitting at home and playing the flash version on your computer.

The game play is pretty much like the arcade game. The power pill is very important. If you eat on these pills, you will be able to eat all the ghosts that are chasing you around. You will recognize these power pills as the large white dots. After you eat one, the ghosts will turn blue. You can eat them but their eyes will remain and then they reappear in the middle box of the maze. So, even if you eat a ghost they will come back to haunt you. If you eat any pieces of fruit you will gain points that will help your score rise. The controls are pretty simple but unlike the arcade game, you must use the arrow keys on your computer keyboard. The arrow keys correspond to the direction that you move him in.

Solid Gold Game Boy

December 4th, 2005 by Al in General Gaming News, Retro Games

Gold Gameboy
This is the kind of story I’d expect to read on April 1st but if true this is one for those with more money than sense, the solid Gold Game Boy.

It weighs in at 27 ounces of solid 18K Yellow gold, the display is also surrounded by diamonds (as are the on/off buttons) and even includes “Original Cables And Extra Game Cartridges”.

So if you can’t get your hands on an Xbox 360 and refuse to be ripped off by buying an overpriced one on eBay you could still being showing off to your friends with this unique piece. Costing a bargain $25,000 you might as well get all the family one for Chrimbo :) .

N – Great Platform Game

November 25th, 2005 by Sean in Game Reviews, Retro Games

N Big Screenshot
Any platform game fans out there? If you’re looking for a bit of a challenge, then why not give the succinctly named N a try? It may not look like much, with pretty much completely monochrome graphics, but just smell that gameplay! With 500 levels included, it’s also going to be quite a while before you complete this addictive slice of game.

The story goes that you are a Ninja with a thirst for gold, which basically means the standard run around the level collecting things. No prizes for originality there. However, whilst your Ninja may only be a little stick man, he’s a beautifully animated stick man, driven by a very detailed physics engine. This means that you can run and leap your way around the levels in a very realistic manner, bouncing off walls with a well timed jump, or getting a big run up to make it over that huge gap.

More Sensible Soccer!

November 11th, 2005 by Sean in Gaming Hardware, Retro Games

Plug and Play Sensible Soccer

After my earlier post regarding the new console version of Sensible Soccer, if you can’t wait until next year perhaps this little gem will help pass the time. The guys at Radica have made a plug and play version of the original Sensi, which is actually the Sega Megadrive/Genesis version shrunk down. It comes with two replica Megadrive pads and plugs straight into your TV via two phono plugs for video and sound.

That’s not all though, because as an added bonus you also get two further Sensible Software games thrown in. These are Cannon Fodder, a game where you take a squad of four tiny army troops through a series of combat missions, and Mega-Lo-Mania, which was a kind of pre-cursor to the RTS genre of games like Command and Conquer or Warcraft.

Among other places, you can pick this up from both Firebox and I Want One Of Those.

A Flash Version of the Classic Tanks

October 26th, 2005 by Bobby in Retro Games

Tanks Game
Overview
Tanks is a highly addictive multi-player flash game that is based off of a simple old windows 95 game. However, tanks has been substantially redone, and now has great graphics, tons of weapons, realistic features like engine upgrades, tank fuel, armor upgrades, and 3 different terrains to battle on.
