Gold Yard

January 1st, 2006 by Anita in Game Reviews

goldyard
This is a great adventure type game that you can play online or download the stand-alone extended version. The online game may not give you as much to do as the full extended version but you can at least try it out before you pay around $10 for the complete game.

The story begins with you being Arthur Barefeet a small hobbit that is also a thief. You have an exquisite taste for all types of glittering objects such as gold, jewels, etc… While you were on a quest, you found a place full of wonderful glittery objects only a couple miles out of town.

It is an old cemetery full of tombs of the richest people throughout the village and it is famously known as the Goldyard by relatives of the dear departed. The relatives during the past would leave valuable gifts to pay homage to their loved ones that had pasted on.

Blob Wars

December 31st, 2005 by Anita in Game Reviews

blobwars
Blob wars is a fun interactive board game where you can play against the computer or a friend online. It is kind of like checkers in one way, but the object of the game is to take control of the board with your blobs. You have to rid the board of your opponent’s blobs or have the most blobs on the board in order to win when the board is full.

You can choose from a different variety of boards to create harder games.

You and your opponent begin with two blobs on an 8 by 8 grid. You start by clicking on one of your blobs to either clone or move. If you only move your blob one-step in any direction, it will clone. This means you will leave one blob where it was and another will appear in the next square you click. If you move two steps, away your blob will move there and there will be an empty space where that blob was before your move. As you and your opponent move or clone your blobs, they will be able to turn their opponent’s blobs into their own if they are close by.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones

December 30th, 2005 by Sean in Game Reviews

Prince of Persia 3
Whilst Prince of Persia: Sands of Time may not have been the first Prince of Persia game to be in 3D (that honour goes to the rather poor PC only game of a few years back) it did reinvent the genre for a console audience. The game was one of the highlights of the 2003 Christmas release schedule, bursting with new ideas and an excellent dialogue and soundtrack.

Last years POP: Warrior Within unfortunately tried too hard to please the masses and instead broke the magic spell created by the first game. The eastern soundtrack was replaced by an unfitting heavy rock track, and there was too much emphasis on fighting. The combat in the original game had been simple and easy to master, but Warrior Within went down the route of throwing in far too many enemies making progress a matter of brawn over brain.

Well, I’m pleased to report that POP: Two Thrones is the true successor to Sands of Time! We have the proper eastern setting again, a more fitting musical accompaniment and the running dialogue throughout the game also returns, this time voiced by a female. Initially I thought this to be Kaileena, the Sorceress of Time from the second game, who the Prince starts the game with, but having progressed a bit further into the game I think that may be wrong.

Jewel Quest

December 29th, 2005 by Anita in Game Reviews

jewelquest
This is a great puzzle and gem matching game that you can find online or download to your computer. The free version does not have as many options but is still fun to play if you just need a break from your daily grind. If you are a real puzzle enthusiast and wish to experience more action then you should purchase the premium game.

In this game, you are an adventurer that faces the Mayan ruins and must rearrange the jewels and other artifacts to turn the sand into gold. As you rearrange the objects, into threes, they will vanish and the puzzle will move down. The object is to turn on the sand into gold on the puzzle in the shortest time possible to achieve a high score. As you complete, the puzzle you will advance to the next level with will be harder than the first to complete. It takes real brainpower to advance in the allotted time. If you do not complete the level the game is over and you must start from the beginning again.

Darwinia

December 29th, 2005 by Jen in Game Reviews

darwinia
Want a break from all those tired games that take the same old storyline, add a few new characters, and beef up the graphics? Take Darwinia for a spin and get hooked back on the classic gaming elements that started your love of gaming in the first place. Where else can you watch the rebirth and march of tiny stick figure men in a polygonal world and fight invading viruses to save thousands of generations of Darwinians? It’s Lilliputian adventure at its very best.

Darwinia is not an easy game to describe. The game is essentially a world within a world, a virtual theme park of sorts, running inside a computer network concocted by scientific genius Dr. Sepulveda. The evolving life forms inhabiting that world are little stick men called Darwinians, and are the product of decades of research into genetic algorithms. Dr. Sepulveda has watched thousands of generations of Darwinians evolve, and despite their simplicity, you can’t help but feel a strong affinity for the little creatures. A nasty virus has been released in the Darwinians world, though, and their continued existence is now threatened.

The graphical landscapes in Darwinia are beautiful and unexpected, developed from “state of the art” fractal mathematics. Read the rest of this entry »

Blair Witch Volume 1: Rustin Parr

December 28th, 2005 by Anita in Game Reviews

blairwitch1
If you watched the Blair Witch movie and didn’t get much out of it but thought the story line was intriguing then you may enjoy this horror game for your pc. The game developed by Terminal Reality is one that is sure to give you some tingles up your spine.

The story is based of course on the movie and the legend around Burkittsville, which is also known as Blair, Maryland. This is the first game in a three game series.

To understand what is going on in the game in case you didn’t watch the movie or didn’t quite get the jest you need to know a bit about Rustin Parr. Some say this is a fictional tale, but who really knows for sure. In the early 1940’s seven children disappeared from the small town of Burkittsville. A recluse by the name of Rustin Parr left his old house out in the woods in 1941, walked into the town of Burkittsville and stated to a shopkeeper, “I’m finally finished.” When the local authorities inspected his home, they discovered six of the children had been murdered in his basement and one child was left alive hiding in a corner.

Shadow Of The Colossus

December 28th, 2005 by Sean in Game Reviews

Shadow of the Colossus
At long last I’ve got my grubby little mitts on Shadow of the Colossus, and I definitely think it was worth the wait. The game was developed by the same team that gave us ICO, the critically acclaimed platform game where you must guide a young girl safely out of a castle.

This game keeps the unique graphical style of ICO, and whilst it features a different main character, you get the feeling it is set in the same universe, since the shadowy black creatures from ICO make a reappearance here. Your character has bought a presuambly dead young woman to a deserted temple, in the hope of restoring her soul and bringing her back to life. The disembodied voices of the temple say they can help, but only if you help them by destroying a series of Colossi first.

The Colossi are huge stone guardians which wander around the land, and when I say huge I mean huge, with the first one you meet being at least 20 times taller than your character. These guys are not just end of level monsters, they are the level too! The colossi are mostly stone but some areas are hairy or grassy, and you can cling on to them. There is a grip meter which shows how long you can hold on for before having to find a place to rest on the Colossus, or risk falling to the ground far below.

Gold Miner

December 27th, 2005 by Anita in Game Reviews

goldminer
You may believe that Gold Miner is not a very addictive game but you would be very wrong. Once I start playing this game, I cannot stop. I want to keep going to see just how far I can get.

This game is similar to the claw game that you find around the malls. You are the Gold Miner and you have to use a reel and claw to mine for objects such as gold and diamonds. The object of the game is to reel in diamonds, gold, and even big and small rocks. You will also find grab bags that can give you such things as strength and other goodies. Dynamite can also be found in the grab bags and can come in very handy when you pick up large boulders and you are running out of time. You can use the dynamite to blow up the rocks. However, you must be careful; you can also blow up the gold and diamonds that are close by.

Wheel of Fortune

December 27th, 2005 by Anita in Game Reviews

wheeloffortune
I always enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune on television and normally I could get the correct answer. However, no one can get every puzzle correct. The Wheel of Fortune game for Nintendo 64 brings the excitement of this television game show into your home with all the fun that everyone in the house can enjoy.

You will be able to play against up to two other players including yourself or go up against computer-generated contestants. Yes, the game may not be a brand new one, but it will still give you hours of fun competing for all the prizes and cash if only in the world of Nintendo.
