Arkanoid DS control scheme not limited

August 22nd, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews, Gaming Hardware

arkanoid-control-options.jpg

As everyone knows, the DS Lite isn’t exactly a graphical powerhouse, but it does fare well as a casual gaming machine although there is a bunch of titles that also target those who are looking more than just five minutes’ worth of gaming. When it comes to arcade classics though, the DS platform, just like the Game Boy Advance platform before it, is king since you will hardly find any more ports of old arcade games on much more powerful home consoles. Arkanoid DS is one of such titles, and what makes it even more interesting is the game will come with a spinner controller for an improved gameplay experience.

Street Fighter coming to cellphones

August 20th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

sf2-ce.jpgThe Street Fighter line of beat ‘em up games could be seen making their way to your cellphones in the near future, according to an announcement made by Capcom. Apparently, the longtime fan favorite Street Fighter II: Champion Edition will be making its debut as early as next month, faithfully bringing all the bone crunching action of the arcade original to a diminutive looking handset. I for one would be interested to see how it turns out, but as most people know, the cellphone doesn’t exactly come with the most optimal controller, especially for games such as these that play best in the presence of a joystick as well as half a dozen buttons.

Mama back with a vengeance

August 15th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

cookingmama2.jpg

Do you still remember Cooking Mama when she first made an appearance not too long ago? The title did generate a fair amount of buzz and interest, and I must say it did fairly well appealing to the casual gaming market. There isn’t a whole lot of strategy or thinking involved - all you needed was some fast reflexes and the ability to judge certain cooking procedures correctly before you unlock every single recipe there is available. Granted, I myself have fallen short in that department as I still have a fair amount of bronze and silver medals that need the Midas Touch. And I’d better get to it fast, at least before Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends are available.

PC version of BioShock demo announced

August 14th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews, Uncategorized

bioshock.jpgXbox 360 owners will be able to enjoy BioShock in the near future, but at the meantime, they will just have to settle for a demo that is currently available via Xbox Live. Unfortunately, the demo weighs in at a whopping 1.35GB, and not surprisingly the high demand has led to reports of slower than usual download speeds which isn’t really a problem as you can always leave your Xbox 360 running overnight while you head off to bed. While this demo is meant for the Xbox 360 community only, 2K has assured that a PC demo is in the works as well and will be available sometime this month. Hopefully this announcement will pacify rabid BioShock fans on the PC platform for the moment.

Barnyard Blast takes a dig at Castlevania

July 27th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

barnyard-blast.jpgBarnyard Blast is set to grace Nintendo’s ultra successful handheld, thanks to the efforts of the people behind Sanuk Software. This cute looking game is set to be released later this year, where both DSI Games and Bigben Interactive will ship the 2D action platformer to North America as well as folks living across the pond (I believe they’re called Europeans ;P). The screenshots at this point in time looks pretty standard DS fare, and while you won’t be dropping your jaw in awe anytime soon, the graphics are clean cut and definitely above average.

Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat 6 experience downlodad success

July 26th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

ace-combat-6-download.jpg

Namco Bandai might have been rather apprehensive at first when it made Ace Combat 6: Fire of Liberation an Xbox 360 exclusive, but those fears were definitely put to rest during the recently concluded E3. The demo for this jet fighter series experienced more than 500,000 downloads during the first week of release alone - a phenomenal number when you think about it, rubbing more salt into Sony’s wound as this is the first appearance of the franchise on a non-Sony console.

Plop Invaders homebrew game

July 24th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

plop-invaders.jpgPlop Invaders is homebrew title that is definitely cute to look at, although at the beginning you’ll probably wonder just what the heck you’re doing. Still, once you get the hang of things, the entire game will start getting addictive (according to the folks at DS Fanboy anyway). The tutorial is in French, so thanks to some leet translation, you’ll be able to jump straight into the action without fumbling around as though it was your first time on third base. Plop Invaders features a match-three core that is extremely simple in design, but don’t be fooled by its complexity!

Slapping enters gaming realm now

July 23rd, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

rosecamellia.jpg

Once in a while, there comes a game that is absolutely hilarious and pointless, although it does have its fair share of fun and engaging gameplay. This title that we’ll look at today does not come with epic storylines, nor does it offer the complexity of a full fledged RPG. Instead, it involves a favorite pastime of girls and women who tend to get their panties all up in a bunch. We’re talking about hardcore slapping here, people, and if this game is anything to go by, it looks like this female fighting stance of choice will now make its way across to the gaming population.

SimCity Societies coming to PC

July 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews, Games – New Releases

simcity-societies.jpg

Looks like we have more Sim goodness heading our way, and the latest title to come would be SimCity Societies from Electronic Arts. This game is a welcome departure from the familiar but fun game model that is found in each SimCity game, giving players the unprecedented freedom to build whatever kind of city they fancy. Previous iterations generally led the player toward building a more modern and metropolitan city as the game progresses, but SimCity Societies throws that notion out of the window, enabling players to live in all sorts of cities such as “industrial” and “fun” types.

Accordion Hero II for the musically inclined

June 27th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews

accordion-hero-2.jpg

While the idea of Guitar Hero on a console is pretty interesting and doesn’t look that ridiculous when playing it, Accordion Hero II certainly pushes the envelope. I mean, seriously - who’d want to look like a fool, getting jiggy with it in the living room while attempting to strike the right digital chords as shown on screen by co-ordinating your button presses on the mock accordion? Hopefully no accomplished accordion players will come after me with tons of flames after this post! The premise is extremely simple and rips off the entire idea from Guitar Hero, where you have to play along to the 65 built-in songs, using the USB Strumpf Blue double-bellows accordion controller.
