Math game for iPad ready to rock and roll

IPMG Publishing is first off the blocks to introduce the first math game app that has been specially optimized for Apple’s popular new iPad, where it was recently unveiled at the 2010 National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) conference in San Diego, California. The app is known as Tic Tac Math Universal, and will definitely not be a simple port of sorts, as it will rely on the special features that are found only on the iPad in order to deliver a fun, engaging math game app for kids to improve basic math skills regardless of where they are – in the car, waiting at a restaurant or anywhere that kids may say, “I’m bored!” The math teachers who had a look at it loved the innovative design applied to a familiar game that offers great opportunity for math skill building.
The reception by the math teachers in attendance was extremely positive, where many of them commentted that it has definitely broadened their horizons a whole lot more than usual, seeing the future potential that the iPad offers in education. Guess this is totally different to what some ivory towers have been doing, banning the iPad while students are on campus. According to Marin Rodriguez, a math teacher from Dublin, California commented, “it’s exciting to see the smaller companies leading the way in embracing the latest technology. Our students are already using these devices at home. Using them to enhance math learning at home and in school is a natural next step.”
It remains to be seen whether students are rich enough to afford the iPad – guess the problem still persists, where the rich will be able to enjoy the benefits of what their money can buy in order to get ahead of the rest of the median curve, while the poor will have to remain stuck with the traditional pen and paper method if they want to increase their math skills. I’ve always been a firm believer of practice makes perfect especially when it comes to math – how about you?

May 15th, 2010 at 3:33 amTic Tac Math sort of “Trojan Horses” the learning in with a game that kids love. This fun game may be viewed by kids as an opportunity to play a fun game instead of a homework assignment? Imagine instead, that by passing Tic Tac Math back to your daughter in the car, she begins to associate doing multiplication problems with having fun. Wow, you may have just sparked the fire of a future positive relationship with math!
That’s what it is, you know, a relationship. Early on in education, kids are told that they’re either good at math or not good at math. And parents reinforce this by saying, certainly with good intentions, “that’s okay honey, I was bad at math too. Or, I didn’t like math either. It’s really hard.” Imagine if the same thing were true with reading? “Oh, that’ okay son, I can’t read very well either. You’ll get by, I know that I have.”
It’s ridiculous, I know. But it happens with math all of the time. You hear it amongst adults too.
A dinner party conversation that may be heard:
Person 1: “Did you see that the US is ranked 24th in the world in standardized math scores?”
Person2 “No, but it’s not surprising, I was never very good at math and I stopped taking it after grade eight.”
Person 1 “Yeah, me too. Math is just so boring and hard to understand.”
Another conversation that you will NEVER hear at a dinner party conversation:
Person 1: “I’ve never been a very good reader. In fact, I stopped trying to improve my reading after eighth grade.”
Person 2: “Uh, gee. I think that I left something in my car……”
All it takes is one little spark to start of fire of a passion for math. Tic Tac Math may just be the thing that connects your son or daughter to a lifetime of success and happiness because they believed that they were good at math!
