Sony announces PS3 Slim

August 20th, 2009 by Edwin in Gaming Hardware

Rumors of the PS3 Slim have been circulating around for quite some time already, and this has proven to be true finally as Sony unveiled its latest iteration of the PS3 – the PS3 Slim, also known by its model number CECH-2000A while coming in charcoal black color. You won’t have to worry about the PS3 Slim’s surface getting all scratched up or having fingerprints plastered all over since it comes in a matte finish, and will feature a 120GB hard drive within as well. Expect to see the new PS3 Slim hit retail stores this September 1st for $299 (the same figure in Euros if you’re living across the Atlantic), while Japan will get theirs a couple of days later. This doesn’t mean Sony will discontinue the older PS3 line, as they will still retain the 80GB PS3 for $299, while the 160GB model is going for $399 from August 18th onwards.

The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume as well as its thickness and weight are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise. While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.

Well, do you think this new rehash will help move sales of the PS3? We suppose bundling a new copy of Gundam or Monster Hunter would do the trick in Japan, but elsewhere it might be a matter of hardware aesthetics. What do you think?
