Game prices start to fall

January 3rd, 2009 by Edwin in General Gaming News

Despite the free falling economy, somehow the video game industry seemed to hold out much better compared to other sectors. In fact, they earned more revenue this year compared to previous years, while news of doom and gloom continue to filter down to the masses about recession and layoffs. Perhaps this has helped make people consider cheaper choices of entertainment by staying at home, and what better way to do so than immerse yourself in a lengthy RPG or have some fun time with friends over your Wii? Unfortunately, not everything is as rosy as it seems, and Forbes thinks that the $60 standard price on new games could come to an end – which is good for us gamers, since $60 is clearly too expensive at this point in time for our cash-strapped wallets. Publishers ought to brace themselves for a tougher period, since gamers are a pretty patient lot and will wait for game prices to tumble before making a purchase – otherwise those titles, no matter how highly sought after they are, will sit on store shelves, rotting away.

To make a point, Ubisoft has already cut the price of EndWar, Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia, and they currently retail for $40, $40 and $50, respectively on Amazon.com. Another huge title like Fable 2 have also experienced a price cut, and it is currently sitting pretty at $45. While this means we won’t see the $60 price point disappear anytime soon, but chances are pretty high that publishers will be forced to reduce prices just a few weeks after releasing their game. Alternatively, they can straightaway offer a best price from the get go, otherwise they might find themselves in deep trouble financially. What’s do you think is a fair price for a video game?

At $60 or so, “new price” is steep. GH and Rockband kits are around $200. WTF!! Just wait a couple of weeks, and get the game used, for about half price.
