Gears of War 2 launched

November 10th, 2008 by Edwin in Games – New Releases

How was your weekend? If you are an Xbox 360 owner, chances are pretty high that you would’ve snagged yourself one of the must-buy titles for this year over the weekend - Gears of War 2. Last Friday, 20,000 retail locations in 20 countries opened their doors to the crowds who could not wait to bring home the latest copy of this must-have entertainment experience. Chances are pretty high that Gears of War 2 will be one of the biggest blockbuster of holiday 2008, and it is available exclusively only on the Xbox 360 console and nowhere else. Expect to see hardware sales get a spike over the next couple of months, too.

In “Gears of War 2,” the last cities on Sera are sinking, swallowed by a new Locust threat from below. As Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad pursue the Locust, the mission turns deeply personal for Dominic Santiago as he uncovers clues in the search for his missing wife, Maria. In addition, all copies of the game come with an Xbox LIVE token to download the Flashback Map Pack for free. The Flashback Map Pack will be available immediately at launch and consists of five popular maps from the original “Gears of War,” including Canals, Gridlock, Mansion, Subway and Tyro Station. Each map has been specially updated with new graphics for “Gears of War 2.”

You will be able to pick up Gears of War 2 in two versions - a Standard Edition and a Limited Edition which will retail for $59.99 and $69.99, respectively. What’s so special about the latter? Well, it will come in a collectible SteelBook DVD case and includes a 48-page hardbound book titled “Beneath the Surface: An Inside Look at ‘Gears of War 2,’” that is filled to the brim with character profiles and exclusive concept art. Those who opt for the Limited Edition will also be rewarded with a bonus DVD containing the making-of documentary, a keepsake photo of Dominic and Maria Santiago, and a coveted Xbox LIVE token to unlock a gold-plated Lancer for online play. Sounds like it is worth every penny of the additional $10 you put out - I believe there will be people who won’t mind taking advantage of the situation by getting a Standard Edition to play, while the Limited Edition is for keeps to auction off 10 years down the road as an investment.
