Mortal Kombat and DC Comics team up
April 20th, 2008 by Edwin in Games – New Releases
Mortal Kombat has always been a rather niche franchise, and the main method it got into mainstream consciousness was through the way of violence back with the first instalment. I suppose it was way ahead of its time, considering how much more violent our video games and movies have come since then - a natural progression (regression to some), perhaps? Once you have made a splash like the original did, it will pretty much be a mainstay game without any help for publicity or the like. This time round, an upcoming Mortal Kombat game from Midway will see it pit old favorites with DC Comics characters in a title known as “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe”. This will be a dual platform release on the Xbox 360 and PS3, as the Wii won’t be able to have the processing power to perform heavy number crunching for the graphics.
Executive Producer Ed Boon did let it slip that both Batman and Superman will be introduced to the Mortal Kombat fold, but I find that fantasy has to be suspended for the moment (strange as that might sound), since Superman can be beat assuming he is controlled by a mediocre player. There will be two new fighting mechanics revealed - Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat.
The former sees characters duking it out as they hurtle toward the ground in an unrestricted free fall, Freefall fights will end when both fighters slam onto the ground before finishing one another off. Klose Kombat focuses on close-quarters fighting, forcing you to rely more than basic punches and kicks.
