Gauntlet for the Nintendo DS launched

gauntlet.jpgEidos Interactive has just announced that Gauntlet - the classic action role playing game (RPG) will be heading towards the Nintendo DS. According to Robert A. Lindsey, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Eidos Inc., “Eidos is proud to revitalize the iconic Gauntlet franchise from Midway by offering a totally revamped iteration of the classic multiplayer action RPG to the Nintendo DS. Gauntlet pushes the technology behind the DS by introducing VoIP as well as offering gamers an in-depth competitive multiplayer experience never before explored in the Gauntlet universe.”

While a fair number of titles on the DS Lite does not take full advantage of the DS hardware (microphone especially, as I believe developers are still trying to crack their brains on just how to make good use of the mic without making the gamer look silly when outside), Gauntlet does this by boasting VoIP, enabling voice communication via the DS microphone. Sounds like a pretty solid idea, communicating with your friends online so that you guys don’t get lost during the latest dungeon outing. After all, the DS doesn’t come with a keyboard so it would be a chore trying to type out what’s happening to you at the moment, unlike PC RPGs.

Gauntlet is set in a fantasy-themed universe where evil cloaks the world from the high clouds of Ascendia to the depths of the lava-ridden Abyss. Players can choose from the four classic heroes, Elf, Warrior, Wizard, and Valkyrie, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and special abilities. Throughout the journey, the heroes will slash their way through demonic foes and gain up to four power move abilities to aid them in their battle with evil. Gauntlet for the DS will be released sometime this summer at a yet undisclosed price.
