Mention Square Enix and what can you think of? Needless to say Final Fantasy lies first in the list, followed by Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest. Well, the gaming company has just announced that it will be launching a new action RPG that does not have anything to do with the above mentioned franchises, and it is interestingly named “The World Ends With You”. This game is set in modern-day Tokyo, pitting you in an immersive and innovative adventure set. It observes all major and latest cultural trends from Japan, including music, fashion, food and design. You play the role of an unsociable 15-year-old boy who wakes up in the Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo, Japan. As he tries to find his way around, he receives a SMS telling him that he will cease to exist should he fail to accomplish a certain mission. Check out the game’s features after the jump.

  • Distinctive modern art style created by a team of artists led by Tetsuya Nomura, world-renowned character designer of the upcoming FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS project which includes FINAL FANTASY XIII and FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII
  • Innovative Stride-Cross Battle System allows players to control two characters simultaneously, unleashing special attacks with the stylus
  • Collect a vast array of custom-designed pins, each with a powerful psychic ability that can be activated with the right touch or sound command
  • Customize characters with Shibuya’s coolest fashions and exchange items with other players via Mingle Mode
  • Experience an amazing soundtrack combining a fusion of musical influences from hip-hop to rock to electronica
  • Battle with up to three friends in Tin Pin Slammer, an exciting and fast-paced mini-game, via local wireless connection

The World Ends With You is rather pricey though, sporting a $39.99 retail tag.
