Super Smash Bros. Brawl trounces competition
February 5th, 2008 by Edwin in Games – New Releases
To say that anticipation for Nintendo’s latest game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii has reached feverish levels would be an understatement. Famous for making near perfect games that are almost elevated to timeless classic status immediately, everyone (whether Nintendo fanboy or not) in the gaming industry will certainly find very little fault in the latest offering. Super Smash Bros. Brawl might feature tons of characters who go up against each other in the game itself, but the stakes are much higher in the real world no thanks to ever-demanding stockholders who want to see you outperform your best all the time. Thankfully, this first party title managed to live up to the hype, and then some. It sold over half a million copies in Japan alone, knocking out sales figures for all other platforms combined with some room to spare.
For comparison’s sake, Super Mario Galaxy (which was a perfectly good game) managed to move a mere 130,000 copies in comparison on its first day in Japan. If 500,000 copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl could be sold on just one day itself in Japan, I can’t help but shudder to think what North American sales figures would be like. Do you think that this first rate, first party title will explode Stateside and be the talking point for months to come, or is it a dud with the only sales anomaly coming from Japan? I’d rather bet on the former as I am, deep down inside, a Nintendo lover for life. Too bad the success of Super Smash Bros. Brawl only serves to reinforce the fact that third party games on any of Nintendo’s platform can hardly (or barely for some) hold a candle to the Big N’s efforts.
