Nintendo Wii big winner in 2007

Despite folks from both the PS3 and Xbox 360 camps (more of the former than the latter, as they play the role of sour grapes) claiming that the Wii is just a fad late last year when the next-gen console war kicked off in full gear, the Nintendo Wii actually managed to hold its ground throughout the entire year of 2007 despite suffering from hardware shortages (imagine 1.8 million manufactured consoles per month flying off the shelves completely) as well as a dearth of games compared to the Xbox 360. It is still as hard to find this holiday season as it was during last Christmas, so you can expect that 2008 will be the same while Sony fanboys continue to ask everyone to wait until they see the next triple A title come along (how many of these false messiahs have we heard about that will turn around the PS3’s fortunes and failed miserably?)

The Wii’s unprecedented success has caused Nintendo’s rivals to shift about rather uncomfortably as they take stock of their current market position while attempting to halt the slide. Sony who proudly claimed that people are willing to work two jobs just to buy a PS3 has to eat their own words, cutting down the price of the PS3 by $100 over the course of the summer while introducing a watered down $400 model along the way. Despite the $450 price tag, that is still a good $150 away from the Wii’s price, which goes to say a whole lot about consumers - they want it good and cheap, never mind all the extras and high definition what-nots.

Which video game console do you plan on getting for your kid this holiday season, and why?
