Mario Kart is one of the most popular Nintendo franchises ever, and in the heydays of the SNES, Mario Kart has spawned a whole legion of other kart racing games that do not hold a candle to it till this day. Mention Mario Kart and a true blue gamer’s eyes will definitely light up, as he/she starts inquiring about your favorite track, best weapon to use, and even whether you favor the “snaking” aspect when playing over Nintendo’s WiFi network with the DS. Following tradition, there has been a Mario Kart title on every Nintendo console released since the SNES, and the latest in line to receive this venerable title is the Nintendo Wii. Multiplayer racing plays a very crucial role in all Mario Kart games, and it will be no different with the Wii version. Best of all is, Mario Kart Wii will boast supernatural powers, supporting up to a dozen players in an online race. Yes, you read that right – 12 players!

4 players was already total mayhem on the DS Lite, and triple the amount of players in a race and you get an exponentially more fun ride. Expect more thrills and spills than ever before, although playing it in the living room might require a little bit more discretion in your choice of language whenever you get hit by a dreaded red Koopa shell. Nintendo will also attempt to streamline the matchmaking process in Mario Kart Wii, and hopefully they will remove the unnecessary Nintendo Friend Codes system. Chances are they won’t, but it doesn’t hurt to keep your fingers crossed, would it?

I would also love to see certain shared maps on the DS being playable, allowing both DS and Wii owners get their race on without purchasing both consoles.
