New PS3 coming our way?

The label that you see above, when read together with a Radio Test Report carried out by EMC Labs on a PlayStation 3 with a new model number, will reveal something interesting - in fact, it could be the long overdue PS3 Lite that everyone has been talking about. Should this piece of news be true, I’m not too sure as to why Sony would want to come up with yet another SKU - as if having two SKUs in the market currently are not enough to confuse customers. Regardless, both documents and a letter from Sony requesting for photographs of the test machine to remain a closely guarded secret can be found at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States.

The test diagram seems to show a paltry couple of USB ports that have been tested onboard the PS3, where one is connected to a controller while the other is hooked up to a PSP. The diagram also did not show any memory card slots, and the omission of something like that is definitely not going to bode well with whoever picks up this model. In fact, the report also stated “As for the differences between: Model CECHG01 and the original model: CECHA01, please see “Point of Difference”. Unfortunately, the “Point of Difference” is not available.

From what we can garner so far, the new PS3 will come with a new model number, lacking USB ports as well as memory card slots, and the fact that Blu-ray was omitted from the test diagram could mean only two things - the PS3 Lite does not have Blu-ray (the PS2.5, perhaps?) or it does not need to be tested in that department. My money is on the latter as to release a gimped PS3 would surely be suicidal for Sony at a time like this. What do you think?
