Sony responds to Warhawk’s DRM
August 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Games – New Releases
There has been rumors buzzing around the industry that the digital download version of Sony’s upcoming PS3 title, Warhawk, would come with a more restrictive DRM policy when compared to other PS3 games has raised some questions about the company’s commitment to their originally stated policy of game sharing. It would appear to be a definite step back and certainly won’t look positive to gamers, but Sony has responded by issuing a statement. Earlier this morning, Sony spokesperson Dave Karraker did mention that such a shift in policy was made “in order to protect our investment in this ground-breaking game and maintain our ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience.”
Karraker also mentions that Sony “will be evaluating each game made available on the PlayStation Network in terms of development cost, maintenance cost, server costs and other factors” when it comes to future titles. Of course, you can always go out to a store and purchase the Blu-ray disc version of Warhawk as that does not come with restrictions found in the downloadable game to a single online account. I wonder how much space on the Blu-ray disc is free – Sony could have just included a bonus game from their PS2 or something in order to add more value for the consumers.
It all boils down to dollars and cents, ladies and gentlemen. Ultimately, if you really want to have your say, hit companies (in this case, Sony) where it hurts the most – their pockets. Vote with your dollars wisely, and try not to be that trusting when it comes to press releases and statements from the head honcho. I’ve noticed many times where the final product does not really tally to what was promised (Emotion Engine and Toy Story graphics, anyone?), and yet we gamers tend to be gullible for such sucker punches.
