Quake III Arena sheds weight

quake-3-zero.jpgHow many of you can still remember Quake III Arena? I remember my own glory days, back when I reveled in the hum of the railgun complete with r_picmip 5 textures entered into the console in order to rain down a hail of plasma death onto my opponents. There were lovable nuances in the game itself, tweaks with air acceleration in Q3Tourney2, along with nice tricks such as plasma jumps (those certainly takes a whole chunk of your health away). For those who have since stopped hardcore gaming since then, why not relive nostalgia in the form of Quake Zero?

First announced at QuakeCon this year, id Software has stated its intention to form a second development team that will bring a slightly updated version of Quake 3 to the masses. Why is it titled as Quake Zero? The answer is extremely simple – the game itself costs nothing for the gamer, since it will be able to run in a web browser and is compatible with both PC and Mac platforms. How is such a project sustained? Well, it relies on a whole lot of generosity as well as some advertising dollars.

id CEO Todd Hollenshead mentioned that “We appreciate what you guys have done over the years in building the popularity of [Quake 3]. We also like ‘free.’ We at id are building a second team, our first project is Quake Zero, which means zero cost, zero hassle. You’ll be able to play Quake 3 in your web browser for free, supported only by advertising dollars.”
