Video fitness centre enlists help of Wii

wii-workout.jpgLooks like the Wii isn’t only doing great in homes across the entire globe, it might soon spread to gyms as well. A Canadian fitness club has taken the first step by being the first to open a Nintendo Wii workout station. Known as Studeo 55 and located in Vancouver, this is possibly the first of its kind in North America that includes the Wii into its circuit training. The club’s owner claims that a single session of Wii boxing, Tennis, or Bowling is the athletic equivalent of going for a brisk walk, although I would say boxing burns the most calories judging by experience. This averages out to 75 to 125 calories being consumed as you trash it out against a digital opponent.

Kim Bey, a former Olympic swimmer, took a shot at this new concept and did not really get the idea in the first place, but after playing Wii Sports for 20 minutes against her personal trainer, she actually broke into a sweat and found it extremely fun. For those who are interested, the console will be placed into a 400 square-foot theatre room complete with a large projection display, where members encouraged to use it as part of circuit training, warm-up, or cool-down. The owner of Studeo 55 claims that there was a certain degree of opposition when he first brought the Wii in, but most of the reaction was positive.

Just take note the while the Wii is a fun way to start sweating, it shouldn’t be seen as a tool when you want to seriously put off those pounds, where traditional exercise methods are by far more effective (although a whole lot more boring). Would you now make it a priority to hunt down gyms with Wiis, assuming this trend takes off across the country?
