Nintendo Wii could overtake Xbox 360 globally
July 20th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Hardware
Let’s see, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft has had almost a year’s head start when compared to the Nintendo Wii, but word on the street (and a credible one at that) has it that Nintendo’s casual white box is slightly less than a million behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in terms of sales. If we take current sales numbers and extrapolate it to the next few months, the Xbox 360 would end up as second place the next time a global sales census is taken. To know just how well the Wii is doing, 245,000 units flew off the shelves last week while Microsoft mustered around a quarter of that at 57,000.
What about the PS3? It fared better last week by moving a Wii bit, er, wee bit under 80,000 sales in North America last week. That’s probably due to the $100 price cut for the 60GB version. Whatever the sales numbers are, it is an exciting time to be a next generation gamer because there will be plenty of titles to look forward to this holiday season from all three consoles, although it would be interesting to see how Microsoft and Nintendo’s releases contend with each other.
In the Microsoft camp, we have heavy hitters such as Halo 3, PGR 4, GTA 4, Mass Effect, and Assassins Creed, while the Wii will rely on old hands Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Smash Bros Brawl. Which camp will you take this upcoming holiday season if you’re still stuck in the GameCube/Xbox/PS2 era?
