Europe not getting PS3 price cut, no 80GB SKU either

ps3-eu.jpgWhile gamers in the U.S. rejoice (for those who want to pick up the PS3 anyway) over the fact that Sony has just given them more bang for their buck with the 60GB SKU, while $599 will net them the 80GB SKU complete with Motorstorm, a fun racing title that has gained critical acclaim worldwide, folks living across the pond aren’t so fortunate. Apparently, Sony won’t be having any price cuts over here, but throwing in free games and accessories instead to soothe the gaming horde. To further dampen the spirits there, Sony announced that there won’t be an 80GB version of the PS3 in Europe…yet.

European gamers seem to get the short end of the stick (as usual), with the “starter pack” remaining at £425 although there will be a couple of free games and two controllers thrown in for good measure. This announcement was made just this morning, and Sony claims that this new bundle gives gamers an additional £115 worth of added games and controller, for free. While this move might placate some gamers, what is more important is the sticker price which did not budge. After all, parents will still need to fork out the same amount, and one of the reasons why it didn’t do so well is because of its relatively high price when compared to its competitor’s products.

CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton has mentioned earlier this week that the U.S. price cut would double the sales figures of their beleaguered console at the very least, so I don’t see why the same cannot be applied for Europe. And to think Europeans won’t be getting the 80GB version to boot is just unacceptable. For comparison’s sake, the PS3 still remains £125 and £225 more expensive than the equivalent Xbox 360 bundle of console and games and the Nintendo Wii with two games respectively.
