Sony confirms PS3 price cut

Looks like all the rumors are true – Sony has just announced that the 60GB PS3 will experience a price cut just 8 months into its release. You can now pick up this console for $499, after a $100 cut. Following the laws of physics, this means Sony has also filled the shoes of the $599 vacuum by introducing a new 80GB PS3 bundle (which has already been out in Korea for quite some time already). This new model is not out in stores just yet, making their way there only in August, and will come bundled with Motorstorm. At the very least this game is pretty fun and isn’t some discarded title that nobody wants.
This early price drop could show signs that Sony is getting desperate, as this is the first time any console experienced this so early into the game. Assuming it drops by $100 every eight months, I guess we could be looking at a free PS3 within what – 4 years’ time? Most people will probably see this exercise with a nonchalant attitude, as the pricing structure remains basically the same – $499 and $599. They just get more bang for their buck, that’s all.
I hate it when executives are forced to issue a statement by the parent company, denying reports of news that has already leaked out. While they think that everyone would probably stop picking up PS3s until the price drop, I personally think that sacrificing a few days’ sales is more than worth the honesty and integrity that comes out from their mouths. After all, if they can lie about such stuff, what about all those 120 games that are supposed to come out for the PS3? Are you sure this console is going to be around for the long haul for the next 10 years? Won’t the PS3’s 802.11g wireless capability be outdated by then (considering how 802.11n is already here)? Ah well, honesty is always the best policy IMHO. What do you think?
