Nintendo Wii gets new channel
June 28th, 2007 by Edwin in General Gaming News
Nintendo’s online offerings are disappointing to say the least when compared to Sony and Microsoft when it comes to consoles. Thankfully, they are taking some steps to change that, and adding channels into their Wii online service is one way of going about it. There is a brand new channel from Nintendo now, and it is called the WiiWare. Unfortunately, the first content on WiiWare will only arrive early next year, so in the meantime you’ve got to keep yourself occupied with Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess if you haven’t yet finished it already. What does WiiWare offer? Head on after the jump to find out.
For starters, WiiWare will offer game developers the chance to sell brand new games over the Internet, where up and coming firms are touted to offer new and ‘creative’ (as creative as they can get harnessing the Wiimote anyway) titles that could be deemed too risky to release on a commercial basis. At the very least, word of mouth is often the best form of advertising since those evangelists clearly believe in the game to spread a good word about it, whereas an advertisement you see in the subway station leaves you wondering whether the game is as good as it sounds.
A Nintendo spokesman mentioned that “WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers”. Looks like the homebrew community is going to pick up its pace, and finally those who have given us great homebrew releases all throughout the years will be able to at least make a profit now.
