Addiction not applicable to video games

June 25th, 2007 by Edwin in General Gaming News

game-addiction.jpgDoctors from the American Medical Association (AMA) who were mulling over the idea of classifying video game addiction as a disease have taken a U-turn on their stand, pushing the responsibility to issue such a ‘fatwa’ to the American Psychiatric Association who incidentally had the final word on the entire situation anyway. Apparently, these people are currently considering to delve deeper into the issue while adding the results of their diagnosis to the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders when 2012 rolls around. Guess by that time we would already be in the next round of consoles, with DirectX 15 running the show.

I suppose no matter what the results or reports that come out from different associations and researchers, what matters most is still how parents bring their kids up when it comes to life. We can’t have government bodies and organizations run our life, can we? Why not take the more proactive approach and start limiting video game time for kids (and for some dads as well).

After all, it is summer now and just like Calvin in Calvin & Hobbes, it is too nice a day to be spent cooped up inside a house while mashing buttons on a joypad away. As the bard once put it, “A rose by any other name smells just as sweet”, so I personally think that video games can be an addiction for some. After all, I’m one who nearly missed my final semester paper in college since I was trying to defeat Altima in Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation.
