Rumor of Xbox 360 price cut
June 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Hardware
The PS3’s main competitor (hardware wise – let’s not get into issues like sales as the Nintendo Wii definitely trounced everybody else so far in the home console department with no sign of letting up), the Xbox 360 has a lower price point than the PS3, but that advantage could be widened further with rumors floating around the Internet concerning a possible price drop. According to some sources, the Xbox 360 Core system will probably see it’s price slashed to $199 – that’s a cool $100 discount from the current $299 price tag. This move, if true, might be seen as a sign of desperation considering how well the Wii has been performing being $49 cheaper than the Xbox 360 core.
Do you think this rumor is true? To date, there has been no official press release from the folks at Microsoft while other gaming sites have kept mum on this rumor. It also doesn’t make sense to drop the Core’s price without seeing the same strategy being applied across the board with the Xbox 360 Premium and Elite SKUs. Assuming the $199 price tag becomes a reality, will you pick up the Xbox 360 Core in favor of the Nintendo Wii?
Anyway, a price drop of any kind from Sony’s competitors will hurt the PS3 even further, since people still feel uncomfortable forking out $600 for a game console that has hardly any AAA titles out for it yet. Not to mention Sony is losing close to $250 for each console sold, a price drop from them will certainly reflect disastrously at the next quarter’s fiscal results.
