Looks like rumors of a revised Sony PSP are flying around yet again, and according to sources “close to Sony”, this revamped version will be unleashed upon to portable gaming community pretty soon. Gamers ought to bear in mind that Sony still thinks the PSP has more than enough horsepower to last until the purported PSP 2 is released, which means this is but a redesign with perhaps some modifications made to the hardware – just like how Nintendo turned the DS from a beast into a beauty with the DS Lite, where it has been doing gangbusters ever since then.

As expected, the rumored new PSP will come in a much slimmer body (let’s give a big hand to miniaturization) which can be attributed mostly to a new LED display that requires a whole lot less space while delivering an ultra-crisp image. In addition, this new LED display will prolong one of the PSP’s major shortcomings – the ultra low battery life. With an expected battery life of up to four times the original PSP, it has reached the lofty heights where the DS Lite is currently residing in. The format system has not been revamped yet (which is a good thing) since you will still be able to make use of your back catalogue. You can expect a faster loading time though, thanks to the 8GB of internal flash memory which will greatly speed up the loading process.

Word on the street is the PSP’s buttons will also receive a renovation notice, while the D-pad has been given a fresh new look that is more suited to a PS3’s D-pad than anything else. What do you think of this rumor – is it a go or no go? Will this drive down the original PSP’s price point when released? Stay tuned!
