Wii injuries get christened?
June 8th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Hardware, General Gaming News
While the Nintendo Wii introduced a whole new way to play games, it certainly pointed out an inconvenient truth to the world - gamers are generally an inactive lot, which is why playing just a little too much Wii for hours on end often result in injuries. For an added touch of geeky humor, these injuries have been dubbed a “Wiinjury” in certain cases, but a doctor (not of the quack variety) have taken a step forward to boldly proclaim that the symptoms resulting from playing too much Wii are similar to those suffering from tennis elbow, and the official medical diagnosis left him with no choice but to declare a case of Acute Wiiitis (pronounced “wee-i-tis”).
The doctor in question is Dr. Julio Bonis, and he himself was a victim of the Nintendo Wii after having way too much fun for hours on end. It is interesting to note that Dr. Bonis’ findings were actually published in the New England Journal of Medicine and was subsequently reported by CNN. Pretty interesting - if you’re an owner of the Wii, have you actually picked up any injury of any kind? I suppose that while games on the Wii doesn’t require you to expend a whole lot of energy when playing, you can’t really ‘get into’ a game by sitting idly on your couch with your wrists giving an occasional flick or two. This just goes to show how successful Nintendo was in creating a console that resulted in truly immersive software.
Thankfully for us, Acute Wiiitis is said to be treatable. All you need to do is take a week-long break from the Wii (a fate worse than death for some) while gulping down ibuprofen for seven days. Oh, and do exercise some restraint when flailing that Wiimote around.
