Plundr: Dangerous Shores homebrew for the DS

plundr.jpgLocation based gaming – now that is definitely a novel idea instead of reliving the same old formulas found across the numerous genres today. Boktai on the GBA with it’s sun-loving chemistry definitely introduced something new to mainstream gaming, but Plundr: Dangerous Shores is a homebrew NDS game that enables you to transform the city around you into a totally different environment, where you then interact and explore it. Playing the protagonist’s role as the captain of a pirate ship, you set sail to pillage and swashbuckle your way to being the lord of all pirates.

Plundr: Dangerous Shores uses WiFi position to track your real life movement, and the software subsequently superimpose landmarks all over your neighborhood map, building up islands that enable you to set sail and investigate. Imagine taking a brisk walk around the block just to check out what other new places do you have to explore, while the rush of going head to head with other ships when walking the dog at in the park is certainly a feeling to relish.

It is interesting to note that the developer originally designed this title with notebooks in mind as WiFi spots are aplenty these days, but somewhere along the way they worked with the R4DS homebrew platform, porting the game over to the Nintendo DS for some portable gaming goodness. The game was already previewed at O’Reilly’s Where 2.0 Conference late last May, but the final version has yet to be released officially. Certainly this is one game worth getting, and the very fact that it is homebrew makes my sea legs all the more excited.
