Ever wonder why people tend to find plenty of pleasure when it comes to simulation games? Take the Tamagotchi craze that caught the world offguard in the last decade. Millions upon millions of these virtual pets were literally flying off the shelves as children worldwide begged, borrowed, and stole to own one of these elusive toys. I suspect even those with real pet dogs and cats at home neglected them with a Tamagotchi in the pocket, and this presumably stems from the novelty factor complete with the ability to start over or reset should you make a mistake – something the real world doesn’t allow. This form of escapism then fueled games like the Sims and with Second Life in full swing, and you see more and more people jump into a virtual cocoon in order to remain detached from the real world. The Nintendo DS Lite is platform to yet another Tamagotchi style simulator, replacing the standard dog/cat setup with a seal. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you read that right – a seal.

Known as ‘Diary of the Seal’, this game was developed by TDK Core as part of the TDK group. You start off by visiting a nearby pet shop, where strangely enough, you can only choose from a wide variety of baby seals. Now, these seals certainly look super cute and are bound to keep young gamers riveted while raising an excited giggle among females. After picking out your seal, you will need to purchase a tank for it (where else is it going to stay) along with the necessary decorations.

Once the tank is decorated, fill it up with water and place the seal inside. Everyday tasks include feeding the seal boiled rice (I thought they ate fish…), cleaning the tank and having a ball of a time with it. Just like dogs, seals can be taught tricks and this is no different within the game. Some of the tricks consist of jumping and underwater acrobatics. When the seal grows old enough, you will need to find him a mate to get married and be fruitful. This is where you bring out the clubs…kidding!
