Test your shoot ‘em up reflexes
May 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews
Remember those shoot ‘em ups of yore? Games where you get level bosses that fill up at least half a screen, spitting out fiery fireballs of death that seem to encompass the remaining half while you attempt to maneuver your tiny little spaceship around tight angles, only to fail again and again. Those games were certainly a challenge to the reflexes of gamers, and I, for one, certainly failed to overcome this physical shortcoming in my premature gaming career as I was always more of a FPS guy than anything else. Normally, I tend to forget using my bombs as well whenever the enemies’ hail of fire get too close for comfort, resulting in the loss of yet another ship (and quarter). For those gaming gods who have memorized the various bullet patterns of numerous shooting games over the years, why not take a trip down memory lane with Takayama Fumihiko’s recently updated BulletGBA?
Just when you thought that the Nintendo GBA was dead, along comes this little homebrew program that is bound to challenge even the most hardcore and skilled shoot ‘em up players of any generation. There are more than 300 bullet patterns to overcome, as these were hand picked out from genre favorites for you to test your dodging skills against. Currently in its fifth iteration, BulletGBA’s 5.0 release features a few new levels, a remodeled shooting mode, and audio tracks from the vaunted Nullsleep team.
There must be something wrong with you if you don’t end up with curses spewing from your mouth nor sweaty palms after giving this a go. 300 levels! Talk about replayability. Nintendo DS and DS Lite owners, take note that this homebrew software does not run on Slot 1 solutions, so you’ll have to settle for a Slot 2 card instead.
