Does anyone think that Sony’s 80GB PS3 is a knee jerk reaction to the Xbox 360 Elite’s launch? After all, didn’t the head honchos at Sony mentioned from the beginning that the PS3 will last the full 10 year course while being ahead of its competitors all the time? To see them throw in an 80GB hard drive is already testament to the fact that the PS3 can’t even go through half a year since its release without an upgrade, no matter how minor it is. Well, the 80GB PS3 is just about ready to bolt out from its stable doors, and surprise, surprise – it will be heading towards Korea first. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. The land of Starcraft and uber advanced cellphones will be getting this spanking new next gen console, even before the spiritual homeland of the PS3 that is Japan.

I wonder why didn’t Sony release this in Europe, since sales of the PS3 were the only good news Sony had (other than the fact that Spiderman 3 is making a killing at the box office) over the past few months. Could it be due to the fact that sales in Europe are also slowing down, and introducing a new 80GB model wouldn’t make any difference since there are still truckloads of 60GB versions sitting down in store shelves? According to SCEE, they mentioned that “At this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe.”

As for those residing in North America, you don’t fare any better. Sony America PR claims that “We’re constantly looking at new… configurations [for PS3], but currently there are no plans to change current hardware offerings [in North America]“. Does anyone have any idea why the 80GB model is headed towards Korea first, and not the other traditional gaming continents?
