The Nintendo DS is often seen as a platform for fun games that are non-violent, keeping in line with Nintendo’s policy of being kid-friendly with mature titles being few and far between. Majesco aims to take the path less traveled by introducing Operation: Vietnam to the masses when fall rolls around. This unique wartime game will feature touch screen command issuing action, a wide variety of weapons, as well as different specialties depending on the soldier type. For those who aren’t content with just mowing down opponents in a hail of hot lead, there are two different types of grenades to flush out your enemies – consisting of smoke and fragmentation grenades.

According to the press release, Operation: Vietnam places players in the position of commanding troops who have been deployed in the war torn jungles of Vietnam as they attempt to make their escape from what many termed to be a living hell. It will feature run-and-gun gameplay that are commonly found in arcade games, while the squad-based gameplay and wide variety of missions help create a fast-paced, exciting experience for owners of Nintendo’s wildly successful handheld.

The player must learn to exercise his leadership ability by rallying his squad while leading them back to safety. In addition, the player has the added responsibility of keeping their men alive while liberating oppressed villagers. While we know how the entire war turned out in real life, turning it into a video game is far too close for comfort for many as the event still holds bitter memories for some. A fictional setting would have been better received IMHO.
