Kurikin Nano Island Story on the DS

kurikin-nano.jpgWhile everyone has not quite yet gotten over the recent releases of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and are still busy trying to catch them all, Nintendo of Japan has recently updated their website with a brand new game that will appear on the DS which shares some gameplay mechanics with the wildly successful Pokemon franchise. Known as Kurikin Nano Island Story (you gotta hand it to the Japs for coming up with the most obscure and yet funny sounding game titles over the years), the game places you in the role of a student at Nano Academy. Your main mission there would be to collect bacteria and sending them into battle against other bacteria.

We do know that the game features over 100 different kinds of bacteria to collect, and they aren’t exactly the nastiest looking ones around. In fact, they have been drawn in such a cute manner that you’d be forgiven if you were to fall in love with getting sick after playing this game. This stylus-intensive game takes place in mostly laboratory settings, although it would have been interesting to see attacks happen in the human body instead.

I can just imagine how the superpowers are unleashed should there ever be a power meter, with shouts of “Penicilin! Quinine! Anti-biotics!” echoing through the DS’ speakers. Before I get carried away by my imagination, you can start polishing up your Japanese as Kurikin Nano Island Story will be available across Japan when May 24 rolls around. Hopefully they’ll developed a localized version within this year so that the rest of the world will be able to partake in some bacteria-busting action as well. Who knows, a kid playing this might turn out to be the next Alexander Fleming…
