Mortal Kombat for Wii has no online play

mortal-kombat-wii.jpgAccording to Shaun Himmerick, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on the Wii will be impotent when compared to editions on other consoles. This is due to the fact that the Wii’s version of the ultra violent beat ‘em up won’t come with any online functionality at all, which will definitely be a big letdown. This comes across as a surprise as previous versions of the game on the Xbox and PS2 came with online play. Looks like a case of one step forward, two steps backwards. Apparently the developer’s wishes to include online play were not complied by Nintendo, lending more weight to whispers in the corridors of the gaming world that Japan’s gaming giant is hell bent on limiting online functionality in their gameplay to first party developers only.

In an interview with Advanced Media Network, Himmerick explained that the problem behind this dilemma is not from a lack of technology, but rather Nintendo did not have their online system ready for the developer when they needed it for implementation purposes. There is an upside to this though - the single player aspect has been improved, including the favorite Endurance mode, a new character, and finely tuned controls on the Wii Remote.

With this news in mind, will you still pick up Mortal Kombat: Armageddon when it is released on May 29 on the Wii? I don’t know about you, but there are only so many times you can defeat a game in single player mode before you become bored of it. Besides, the lack of online play definitely reduces the longevity of a title. You can’t get your neighbor over or whoop your dad’s ass on the Wii for too many times in a row anyway. This is definitely sad news - hopefully Nintendo will be able to make a change in their apparent policy in the near future the for benefit of gamers.
