Yet another special edition DS Lite

Fans of Gundam and giant robots will definitely look forward to the upcoming Gundam title on the Nintendo DS Lite platform. Featuring half a thousand characters (yes, count ‘em - 500), 300 mobile suits, and more than 120 stages from over 15 different Gundam series, you’d be hard pressed to hate this game even if you dislike the idea of having humans control some illogically huge robots. Bandai Namco is offering more than a potentially explosive title, releasing a special edition DS Lite bundle that ships with SD Gundam G Generation Cross Drive. This new limited edition handheld console will come with the same red branding that is found on Amuro Ray’s RX-93 V Gundam as seen on the animated film, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

No idea on whether this title from the strategy RPG genre will ever make it Stateside, so keep your fingers crossed for a translated, localized version to appear many months (or perhaps even a year) down the road. There are no guarantees of that happening though, so you’d better appeal to Bandai Namco if robots are your cup of tea. Due for an August 9th release, this special edition will cost approximately $183 after conversion, but you’d probably end up forking much more than that from an import shop.

What do you think of this new special edition DS Lite? If you’re living outside of Japan, would you pay an exorbitant price just to import one of these? I see that the current Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings special edition DS Lite is currently retailing for a whopping US$299 online, and although that includes the game itself, you’re looking at paying at least a $100 premium compared to picking up the title and a regular colored DS Lite on the side. What gives with all these limited editions anyway? No wonder the DS Lite is doing extremely well in Japan with the variety of limited and special editions there that rival the amount of sushi varieties on their plates.
