The Simpsons to debut across all consoles
May 10th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Development Insights
While everyone loves the Simpsons as a cartoon, use of the family’s creative license when it comes to games have been a hit or miss affair over the years, dating back all the way to the 8-bit era when the NES was still king. Electronic Arts wants to make sure that no matter what type of console you proudly own, you will be able to get a taste of the hilarious Simpsons family on the PS3, PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS platforms when the Simpsons Game is released later in autumn this year. Hopefully the movie will do well to drive the sales of the game, else a negative movie experience might translate into poorer game sales.
The Simpsons game is said to be in line with the action-comedy genre, as the gamer takes control of Homer and his dysfunctional family (Marge, Bart, and Lisa) in an effort to save the world from utter chaos. The executive producer of the Simpsons game hopes that this will be the most original game ever (is he speaking from the Simpsons point of view or the entire video game industry as a whole), capturing the game’s visual feel and look of the TV show. While that might be possible on high powered consoles, it will be interesting to see how the Nintendo DS version comes out.
Which do you think will bomb - the game or the movie? My money is on the former, but with all the production problems plaguing the movie just ten weeks before it’s premiere, it could go either way. Just an interesting note to point out - there will be no title available for the GBA platform, which basically means that portable SNES from Nintendo has finally bit the dust, with TMNT being the last great beat ‘em up title.
