Custom Beat Battle: Draglade to adorn DS screens
May 9th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews
When the Nintendo DS was first announced, most people thought that it was too gimmicky and the fad of having two displays would just die out within a short while, placing the final nail in Nintendo’s coffin and bringing an illustrious video game career to an end. Who would have known that the DS would grow from strength to strength into the juggernaut that it is today? One of the main reasons for that is software - the sheer number of quality titles on the DS are truly overwhelming, and developers have managed to squeeze out some creative juice from their brains instead of giving gamers the same old tried-and-tested formula by introducing an RPG cum puzzle genre in the form of Puzzle Quest as well as a host of other innovative titles. Custom Beat Battle: Draglade from Banpresto is such an example, bringing to fruition the amalgamation of rhythm, fighting, and RPG games into a single title.
You on-screen fighters can be customized with beat combos, and you can will them to release deadly special attacks by timing button presses with a meter that displays a rhythm sequence. Someone musically deaf like me will probably find this to be a challenge, as I haven’t even beaten Elite Beat Agents on the most difficult setting yet despite numerous, hair-pulling attempts. You characters in Draglade can also level up and purchase items from shops that aid them on their journey.
What are some of the other gaming genres that you would like to see incorporated into the DS platform?
