20GB PS3 still gasping

ps3-20gb-no-more.jpgLooks like the 20GB version of the PS2 has not quite bought the farm worldwide just yet, as the Japanese are still able to get theirs while the rest of the world basically sits down and pout. Strangely enough, all the angst that arose from the 20GB PS3’s withdrawal came from gamers - the very same group that Sony pinpointed did not want that particular model. Most gamers would be content with the cheaper yet fully functional Blu-ray player PS3, as they don’t mind hooking it up to a wired Ethernet connection to go online with it.

According to a Sony Computer Entertainment representative said, he mentioned “We’re currently not considering changes akin to North America. However we would like to react flexibly with the market.” Random checks with several game shops across Tokyo also showed that both 20GB and 60GB versions are in stock, and the weak demand probably resulted in both 20GB and 60GB used models sharing the same sticker price of 49,800 yen.

On another note, Sony U.K. also mentioned that the company will continue monitoring the demand for the 20GB model, and the level of demand will be factored into future Euro launch plans. Did somebody tell him that the 20GB model never made it to Europe at all? Better grab those 20GB PS3s now and make a killing on eBay 20 years from now due to their relative rarity! Heck, why not pick one up the next time you head off to Japan for a holiday. After all, it’s much cheaper there anyway.
