DS Style for more casual gaming
April 5th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Previews
You can certainly commend Square Enix for putting their heart and soul into developing titles for both Nintendo platforms, namely the Wii and DS. In fact, there is a new line of software for the DS called DS Style that targets the large casual gaming audience market. These games won’t require drastic actions like saving the world or rescuing a princess in a 10-hour platformer, but instead focuses on leisurely activities such as yoga, classical music, and gardening. This is clearly a departure from what a traditional game is like, a there that the DS does extremely well with its stylus controls.
While DS Style might not offer as much excitement to the hardcore gamer when compared to yet another offspring from the Final Fantasy franchise, it will definitely attract a wider audience whom Nintendo ultimately hopes will convert those casual gaming moments into more hardcore titles, essentially securing at least the next wave of gamers for future console releases. I’m sure even hardcore gamers will enjoy these new titles, as I’m thoroughly having a ball of a time cooking up dishes on my DS via Cooking Mama while keeping my brain healthy with Brain Age.
In addition, Square Enix is looking to release DS travel guides which are based on the popular World Walking tour book series that are available in Japan. These guides are essential lifelines for tourists and backpackers from other countries, helping them know a little more about Japanese culture and tradition without thumbing through a thick Lonely Planet guide.
