Nintendo could expand Mii experience
April 4th, 2007 by Edwin in Game Development Insights
In an interview with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto himself, he dropped some hints that Nintendo could be working on upgrading the entire Mii experience in view of what Sony is offering on the LittleBigPlanet and Home fronts. According to Miyamoto, he hasn’t seen the videos of Sony’s attempt and starting a social network of PS3 owners (I seriously doubt that claim – this is Nintendo we’re talking about and they’re normally on the cautious side although one might argue sticking to what is mostly GameCube architecture for the Wii with High Definition consoles as its competitors hardly rank on the careful side of things), but Nintendo’s attempt with the Miis will take a different approach and not offer more of the same thing that is already available in the market.
Shigeru mentions that Nintendo plans to expand upon the Mii idea by offering some form of Sim-type experience. It is something where plenty of interest has been generated not only by the gamers themselves but developers as well. The primary problem would be the lack of time as well as creating a product that can be used in a viable manner across a wide demographic.
I’m sure both Wii and DS owners would want to see some form of interactivity between both consoles, where a gamer can download his/her Mii and play it on the DS in different games, gain some extra items, and head back to the Wii to trade those items with other gamers. Such a compelling social experience is definitely the dream of many a gamer, so until that day comes, we’re waiting for someone brave enough to release some resources to see this vision come true. Will Nintendo take up this clarion call?
