Will the Final Fantasy XIII be exclusive to PS3 only?

March 23rd, 2007 by Edwin in General Gaming News

ffxiii-exclusive.jpgLosing the Devil May Cry franchise and Ace Combat as exclusives title for the PS3 was definitely a big blow to Sony, and now there is some rumblings from SCEE France president Georges Fornay who claimed that (loosely translated – pardon my French), “As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion.” In discussion? We would like to know whether the discussion concerns just how many more Final Fantasy titles will be launched purely on the PS3, or will Square Enix take the more profitable route of releasing one of its most valuable licenses across multiple platforms? After all, it isn’t exactly as though the PS3 is selling like hot cakes. Just take a look at the midnight launch at Australia – more media than average blokes turned up.

Then again, we could be reading too deep into things and take that statement totally out of context. Although Square Enix has developed titles across different platforms before, history beckons the fact that Final Fantasy XIII should remain a system exclusive despite exceptions in the past (case in point: Final Fantasy VII and VIII were released for Windows in less than a year after the PSOne releases).

Unfortunately, an interview with GameSpot last week revealed that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi did mention in passing that Final Fantasy XIII’s proprietary White Engine is now an “open platform”, and hence the possibility of seeing FFXIII appearing on the Xbox 360 in the near future. What do you guys think? Is the Sony ship going down faster than the Titanic, or is there some semblance of light at the end of this long, winding tunnel that is the PS3?
