Second Life experiences terrorist threat

They say that art often imitates life, and that is the case with the Second Life game as some stores within the virtual world were faced with the terrorist threat of bombs. Apparently, the Second Life Liberation Army, also known as the SLLA, has successfully detonated bombs outside virtual American Apparel and Reebok stores. These bombs actually appear as white balls, blocking out part of your screen so that you cannot see what lies behind. Thankfully, unlike its real world counterparts, the bombs in Second Life do not maim or kill its residents.

Apparently the SLLA is on a warpath to replace the Linden Lab rule with a democracy to ensure that the four million residents in Second Life will be able to have a voice in the virtual world. Democracy and all is good, but you still need to draw the line somewhere as having the freedom to do anything you want can be dangerous, especially when it is abused. The SLLA claims that it will disband and hand power back to the political wing of the movement when its objectives are achieved – something which we have heard all too often from dictators and ‘freedom fighters’ who stayed on long after their welcome has expired.

It makes me wonder, is Second Life so open ended that it is possible to even purchase the materials to concoct a virtual bomb? Shouldn’t the programmers take a stand to prevent any morally outrageous acts that cause nothing but anarchy? I suppose this is a storm in a teacup, but it is still unnerving to see chaos being allowed in a family oriented game such as Second Life.
