Codemasters kiss and make up

codemasters-replacement.jpgHow often do you see a game company actually take the trouble to appease their customers by going the extra mile? The answer would range from “Not Very’ to “Never”, but thankfully Codemasters is going against the grain by appeasing customers who bought a broken copy of Bubble Bobble Revolution for the Nintendo DS last year. Apparently, that game was flawed when it came to the Level 40 boss who had gone A.W.O.L., making the remaining 70 levels inaccessible. After some time, Codemasters announced that it will be sending out working versions of the broken game to every single person who purchased the software. Word has it from AMN that not only will these customers get a free working replacement of Bubble Bobble Revolution, they will also be recipients of Rainbow Island.

The letter which Codemasters sent out along with the replacement software mentions (quoting verbatim): “We would like to apologize for the problems you have had with this game and hope that the need to swap the cartridges did not inconvenience you too much. We have enclosed a free copy of Rainbow Island, also for the Nintendo DS, as consideration for the length of time that you had to wait for the new cartridges to be manufactured.”

Bugs in a game are expected, but an error of that magnitude should never have made it into the consumers’ hands. Thankfully, Codemasters has done the right thing and giving a little extra bonus by throwing a copy of Rainbow Island. Perhaps Sony could take a leaf out of Codemaster’s book by doing something about the botched backwards compatibility issue in the European PS3 launch (granted, that is from the hardware point of view, but the principle remains).
