Xbox Live on the road

It is just not normal these days to have a standard car audio system – you have to have some form of video entertainment to go along with it. Speaking of which, there are over a dozen ways to set up your DVD player for in car viewing, where some configurations are even optimized for playing video games while hitting the road. Unfortunately, none of these solutions are able to offer a way to connect to online gaming services such as Xbox Live – at least not until now. Jake Ludington’s site has posted about their experience on playing multiplayer games (Rainbow 6 Las Vegas and Uno) online whilst in the car, courtesy of Google’s city-wide WiFi connectivity.

If you ever need free WiFi, Mountain View, CA is the place to be thanks to Google’s generosity. Just in case you have some time to kill and do not want to waste Google’s effort in providing free WiFi, you might as well get started on the following project. This project involves a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that was fitted with a 23″ Samsung HDTV along with an Xbox 360 connected to Google’s free WiFi connection through a notebook. The HDTV display is mounted at the back of a passenger seat via a flat wall mount kit, where it is securely zip-tied to the headrest for greater stability.

A couple of inverters were needed to power all these. If you want to know how much the entire setup costs from scratch, the final number stands in the region of approximately $4,000. This bunch of money will snag you the 23″ HDTV display, the Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 camera, a couple of inverters, and a notebook. You spouse might not approve of such a project, but the kids definitely will. This brings a whole new meaning to the word joyride.
