New Square Enix MMORPG coming to Xbox 360

squareenix-xbox360.jpgSquare Enix producer Hiromichi Tanaka has recently dropped the bomb that he has been working on a spanking new MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista platforms. Square Enix and Xbox 360 doesn’t sound like a possibility a year ago, but apparently things are not always what it seems. Tanaka also added that development of the said MMORPG for the PlayStation 3 is also a possibility. This breaking news brings us back ten months ago, where Tanaka said that such a project was not in the works, and back in April last year he also mentioned that the project will be a PS3 exclusive.

Looks like the tables are turning, and at the end of the day developers will work on machines with a larger install base and one that is easier to program for. It is much easier to port an Xbox 360 version over to the computer as they share many similarities, and judging by World of Warcraft’s success, a Square Enix RPG could be just the thing to provide some much needed competition to Blizzard’s all conquering MMORPG.

Square Enix has already put pen to paper their intent in developing several versions of Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3, so it is best to cover all bases from a developer’s point of view by working on a multi-platform solution by bringing its next offering to the Xbox 360 platform first, followed by the Xbox 360 later. On all accounts, this project is the perfect ground to make use of Square Enix’s recently acquired Unreal Engine 3 license. Looks like exclusives are starting to slip from the PS3 platform already.
