DS WiFi Link review
January 26th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Hardware
We all know that some Nintendo DS games require a working WiFi connection for some multiplayer goodness, and as hardcore and casual gamers alike can attest, there is nothing quite like competing against another player from a different part of the globe over the race tracks in Mario Kart DS, sharing one another’s lives in Animal Crossing, and even fragging your friends over a game of Metroid Prime: Hunters. Unfortunately, not everybody has a wireless connection at home, so instead of purchasing a wireless router just to play your WiFi-capable Nintendo DS games, there is a cheaper alternative in the form of the WiFi Link. You can either pick up the original Nintendo WiFi USB connector which costs more than the third party WiFi Link from Brando.
At $35, you get a plug and play WiFi link adapter that automatically creates a wireless access point in your home via an Internet enabled computer. This WiFi Link is not only compatible with Nintendo DS games, but it works equally well with PSP games too. Of course, when you’re done with your games, you can always use other WiFi-enabled devices like notebooks and PDAs to go online.
I tested out the WiFi Link and it works great up to 10 meters or so, where the signal will drop drastically or disappear totally after that. I did not have any problems connecting to other games, but there was the issue of an occasional drop. I suspect this could be due to the broadband connection that I have at home rather than the WiFi Link itself. If you currently own a Nintendo DS and do not have a wireless connection in your vicinity, it would be prudent to give this WiFi Link a second look. You can’t really go wrong putting down $35 for it, considering the amount of fun you will have over multiplayer games.
