Is Sony pulling a fast one?

ps3-shortage-cleared.jpgCould Sony have finally put its production woes behind it? Apparently, David Karraker from Sony Computer of America thinks so, assuring gamers all over the world that PlayStation 3 manufacturing problems have gone the way of the dodo, and they are more than ready to pump out an arsenal of PS3s in view of the frantic holiday season. Despite moving slightly less than 197,000 units so far, Sony claims that they are on target to ship 1,000,000 PS3s to stores by the end of the year in the U.S. alone – do take note of the word play here, how many of PS3s do you think will actually be picked up out of the shipped 800,000 units? I believe the majority of these consoles will be hawked off on eBay anyway.

This overly bullish statement was released three days ago, and today Sony Corporation’s president, Ryoji Chubachi claims that Sony will in fact stick to its initial target of shipping 2 million PS3s by the end of the year. With the bottleneck issue out of the way, is revising their shipping targets all there is left for Sony to do? I think there is more than meets the eye to this interesting development.

In addition, Ryoji Chubachi also mentioned in passing that they are also sticking to their guns when it comes to the 6 million PS3 worldwide target by the end of their fiscal year when March 2007 rolls around. Sony will also launched the system in Europe “as soon as possible”. Reading between the lines, A.S.A.P. is never a good term to rest your promises on as a consumer, what more when such a statement is issued from a hardware developer.
