More on Sony’s failed viral marketing campaign
December 14th, 2006 by Edwin in General Gaming News
Remember the Sony fan site that we covered a few days’ ago that featured Sony playing the dumb card on its customers and public once again? Apparently, they decided that enough was enough, finally issuing an apology on the website that stirred a hornet’s nest. Personally, I think that it is a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. No apologies would definitely irk a large segment of the population as they would think that Sony is still having its head stuck somewhere up in the great big blue sky. An issued apology would look pretty dumb on their part too, as it shows the immaturity of the once infallible giant consumer electronics company.
Here is the entire apology in verbatim from their busted site.
“Busted. Nailed. Snagged. As many of you have figured out (maybe our speech was a little too funky fresh???), Peter isn’t a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP.”
Making cool products, eh Sony? Well, we know that your PlayStation 3 is definitely way ahead of its time, but making promises that you cannot keep to your customers and then releasing plenty of spin in terms of excuses have won you lots of bad karma. Hopefully they clean their act up in the coming year as we are always ready to forgive a gaffe or two, but string too many in a row at your own risk. Has this entire episode added more bad taste to your mouth, or are you willing to start over on a clean slate with Sony this Christmas? How many of you are getting PS2s, PS3s (subject to availability), and PSPs (plenty of those lying around)?
