Handheld Gamers Getting Clever

Dr. Kawashima
Dr. Kawashima must be celebrating. The game he has lent his name to is certainly proving popular right across the world. Nintendo have just announced that the game has sold a massive 500,000 copies in the 9 weeks since it’s release, smashing the 16 weeks it took for the game to reach that figure in Japan.

For those that haven’t played it, the game consists several mini training games involving simple mathematics, reading and memory tests, with most tests starting simply and getting steadily more difficult. Some tests really do make you concentrate hard, for example the one where the player must keep track of the number of people inside a house whilst people leave through one exit and arrive through another.

Once you’ve done enough training for the day, you can do a brain age test, which consists of three randomly chosen tests. How well you do then gets translated into an estimated age for your brain, compared to an intelligent 20 year old. Getting your brain age down to 20 feels quite an achievement, and it’s incredibly disappointing to find your brain is older than you actually are!

It’s nice to see an educational title doing so well, so give it a try if you haven’t already, and you’ll be benefitting yourself in the process!

500,000 copies in 9 weeks, that’s a lot.
