Golden Axe Returns

Golden Axe
It may come as a bit of a surprise, but Sega are bringing back Golden Axe on PS3 and XBox 360. The original was a fine 2D scrolling beat ‘em up, originally released in arcades in 1989. Whilst it was converted to all the popular games systems around at the time, a proper sequel was never released, so the decision to create one now seems a little odd, but never-the-less welcome.

You could choose to play as either a Valkyrie style warrior female, a Conan a like male warrior, or a Dwarf. So far only the female character seems to have been confirmed, but it seems likely that at least the original three choices will remain.

One of the cool things about the original, and something that is set to return in the new game, was the ability to ride on the back of some weird and wonderful creatures. This would give you a bit of an advantage over the enemies, unless of course they too were riding one.

The original game also made use of magic, which was pretty much a case of picking up magic potions which could then be used as a kind of smart bomb. It seems safe to assume we can expect this area to be vastly expanded upon.

It sounds as if the game is going to be upgraded to have some RPG elements, presumably levelling up your character at the very least, and possibly looking after your animal mount, but otherwise not much more in the way of details has been released.

Someones gotta says this but this is probably (make that definitely) going to be arse of the highest order.

Apparently it’s being done by the same guys who did *cough* Final Fight Streetwise… need I say more?

Final Fight Streetwise… a game to strike fear into the hearts of all lovers of that fabled franchise. *sigh*
