Sega buys Sports Interactive
April 5th, 2006 by Sean in Game Development Insights
Another acquisition of a developer by a publisher has occured, with Sega purchasing Sports Interactive for a cool 30 million GBP! (around $52 million)
Sports Interactive (SI) were the original developers of the Championship Manager games, published by Eidos. A few years back SI broke off their links with Eidos, and whilst they took their code and statistics data with them, the Championship Manager name stayed with Eidos, who set up a new studio (Beautiful Game) specifically to continue the series. SI meanwhile swapped publishers to Sega, and developed Football Manager instead.
Football Manager seems to have brought many of the fans of Championship Manager with it, and new updated versions are due soon on XBox 360 and PSP. The firm have also got a similar offering in the sport of Ice Hockey, with NHL Eastside Hockey Manager, and Out of the Park, a Baseball offering.
