As the Gamespot Best and Worst of 2005 Awards draw to a close this weekend, the question on everyone’s minds is “Which game will win Game of the Year”? Well, excited gamers need to wait no more. The announcement came this afternoon that the top honor of Game of the Year has been awarded to…. drum roll please…

Resident Evil 4!!!

Resident Evil 4, notes Gamespot, is an “amazing achievement, especially in how its inspired, state-of-the-art cinematic presentation works so well with its relentlessly exciting, white-knuckle action”. The game, developed by Capcom for the Gamecube, has been enormously popular with gamers and critics alike since the game’s release nearly one year ago (January 11, 2005). It won Game of the Year at the Spike TV Game Awards in October, and took home the awards for Best Action Adventure Game, Best GameCube Game, and the Most Improved Sequel at this year’s Gamespot Awards. Always in the media’s eye, Resident Evil 4 also topped the Family Media Guide’s list of the Top 10 Most Violent Games of 2005 back in November.

Resident Evil 4 features amazing graphics, a strong (although length) storyline, and is unmatched in pure gore and in-your-face shooting action. The twists and turns of the story keep the game suspenseful and addicting, while an abundance of extra game features give Resident Evil 4 significant replay value.

Other nominees for Game of the Year included:
 Battlefield 2 (Developer: Digital Illusions, Platform: PC)
 Civilization IV (Developer: Firaxis Games, Platform: PC)
 F.E.A.R. (Developer: Monolith Productions, Platform: PC)
 Forza Motorsport (Developer: Microsoft Game Studios, Platform: Xbox)
 God of War (Developer: SCEA, Platform: PlayStation 2)
 Guild Wars (Developer: ArenaNet, Platform: PC)
 Guitar Hero (Developer: Harmonix Music Systems, Platform: PlayStation 2)
 Mario Kart DS (Developer: Nintendo, Platform: DS)
 Ninja Gaiden Black (Developer: Team Ninja, Platform: Xbox)

Finalists for the final Gamespot award, the Reader’s Choice Award, will be announced on Christmas Day. Gamers will have a month to cast their votes for their choice of the top game before with the winner is announced in late January 2006.
